Started in 2017, the Legacy Scholarship Program was designed to help break the transgenerational nature of poverty by providing financial assistance to children of Fellowship Housing families as they pursue post-secondary or trade school education. Scholarships are available to children of current or graduated Fellowship Housing mothers. Students who are enrolled in or have been accepted to an accredited post-secondary or trade institution can apply on an annual basis for a scholarship to be used for up to four years of their education. Applicants must have a demonstrated financial need, maintain a 2.0 GPA from either high school or college, and demonstrate a commitment to their community. As of 2024, we have had 10 Legacy Scholars awarded with 5 recipients of a Legacy Scholarship graduating with their post-secondary degree.

Who Should Apply?

To be considered for a legacy scholarship, you must be:

  • The son or daughter of a Fellowship Housing graduate.

  • Accepted/enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited post-secondary institution or accredited trade school for the academic year the scholarship will be granted.

Selection Criteria

The decision to grant a scholarship is based on the following criteria:

  • Financial Need

  • Full-time enrollment in post HS approved institution.

  • Academic potential - a demonstrated ability and desire to success at a post HS graduate endeavor

    • Minimum High School GPA of 2.0 (for first time applicants)

    • Minimum College/University/Trade School GPA of 2.5 (for subsequent year renewal)

    • Demonstrated contribution to their community

Basic Selection Process

The basic process for evaluating applicants and awarding scholarships is as follows:

Step One | Four Standard Selection Criteria

All applicants are evaluated by the committee based on the follow four standard criteria

  1. Financial Need: This is based on the financial information that is furnished in your application, by information provided by your letters of recommendation, plus any reinforcing narrative you provide. Documentation must also be provided from your school of choice to demonstrate a need in funding.

  2. Full Time Enrollment: This is based on providing proof from the institution that you have been accepted or are enrolled in a full-time program working toward a degree or certification.

  3. Academic Potential: This is based on your academic transcripts, and by testimony to your scholarly commitment and/or work ethic that is provided by a letter of recommendation by a teacher.

  4. Contribution to the Community: This is based on information presented in your application form, by information provided by your letters of recommendation, plus any reinforcing narrative you provide.

Step Two | Decision Making

The Legacy Scholars Committee will review all applications and supporting documents. Decisions regarding which candidates will be interviewed and selected to receive a Legacy Scholarship as well as scholarship amounts will be made by the committee based on the information provided in step 1.

Step Three | Conditional Offer of Scholarship

Candidates selected in Step 2 will be emailed a conditional offer of scholarship. They will be asked to provide additional information (e.g. validation of enrolment in the academic year for which the scholarship is applied, financial aid information, etc.) by a given deadline. Should they respond in a timely way with the requested information, the conditions will be removed and they will be awarded a scholarship.

Step Four | Confirmation of Scholarship

With all conditions met, scholarship recipients will be officially advised by email of their award. As a courtesy, applicants who are unsuccessful in the scholarship program will be notified by email.

Step Five | Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the annual Fellowship Housing Gala held in March and may be asked to speak at the event.

Step Six | Funds Disbursement

All scholarship funds will be paid directly to the approved institution. The amount paid shall not exceed $2500 a semester; specific disbursement amounts will be determined based on tuition balance after any other grant or scholarship assistance is applied.

Scholarship Renewal Process

As a Legacy Scholar, you are eligible to renew your scholarship for 4 consecutive years. The decision to renew a scholarship is based on the same criteria. Documents needed for renewal each semester consist of:

  1. Current full-time enrollment in an accredited school. Full-time status reflected in current course enrollment.

  2. Recent transcript showing course completion and GPA.

  3. Current bill/tuition invoice for semester applying with address for where payment should be mailed.

A special note from a Legacy Scholarship recipient…

“Fellowship Housing gave my mom hope when she was hopeless. I look at my mom who shared her knowledge of independence and financial stability with my sister and I every day. Watching my mom grow into a great role model gives me chances every day to be better as a person and for others.”
