Sofia moved from Mexico to the United States when she was 17 years old. She lived in California with her boyfriend and had her first two children. Their relationship ended after her boyfriend became physically abusive. Sofia chose to stay in California and work long hours in textiles. She eventually moved to Chicago to be near family. Years later, she fell in love, got married and together they had a daughter, Cassandra. Due to a job transfer, her husband moved to Florida leaving Sofia and Cassandra in Illinois. When they arrived in Florid to visit, Sofia found out that her husband was in another relationship. She and her daughter returned to Illinois and not long afterwards lost their home due to foreclosure. In the midst of paralyzing uncertainty, Sofia heard about Fellowship Housing.

“Fellowship Housing taught me how to budget. I worked with the IRS to release me from the tax liens and negotiated with my debt collectors to pay down my debt. After two years, I can say I am debt free and have increased my credit score to 610. I have also been able to save $10,000,” shared Sofia. Sofia eventually applied for and was accepted by Habitat for Humanity. She saved, put in the required equity hours and 4 months later she and Cassandra moved into their very own townhome!
