Erin Jackson just became the first black woman to win gold at the Winter Olympics! The 29-year-old Floridian finished her lap in a mere 37.04 seconds, earning Team USA's first gold in the women’s 500-meter speed skating race in decades. Jackson's story is a remarkable climb to gold –she only began speed skating in September 2017!

Erin had declared it her ambition to increase racial diversity in speed skating on arriving in Beijing. She said: “'I'm looking forward to being one of those people that young kids and people of color can look at and say 'hey she's out there doing it, so we have some representation.’”
